At the beginning of her career, La Plante was known under the name Lynda Marchal. She began acting regularly on the stage for the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and in a variety of series on British television, including “Simply Sheila” that came out in 1968, “The Doctors” in 1969-71, “Rentaghost” in 1976-84, “Why Didn't They Ask Evans?” in 1980, “The Draughtsman's Contract” in 1982, “Highroad to China” in 1983, “The Gentle Touch” and “The Sweeney”.
La Plante formed her own television production company “La Plante Productions and Cougar Films” in 1994. She was an executive producer of numerous series and films, including “Trial & Retribution” in 1997-2007, “Killer Net” in 1998, “Supply & Demand” in 1998, “Widows” in 2002, “The Commander” in 2005-06, “Mothers and Daughters” in 2004, “Imagine Me & You” also known as “Eine hochzeit zu dritt” in 2005.
La Plante's professional writing career blossomed while she was acting in the series The Gentle Touch. Dissatisfied with her character's dialogue and other aspects of the series, she wrote four plot treatments, under her married name of Lynda La Plante, for other episodes of the series. But on one of the plot outlines, someone in the producer's office had jotted a short encouraging note. Taking this as a cue, La Plante began reworking that outline into a standalone program that eventually became her first television drama, the crime story “Widows” that came out in 1983.
Following the overwhelming success of “Widows”, La Plante became a sought-after crime writer and subsequently signed her first book deal with Pan MacMillan. Her novel “The Legacy” was published in 1987, “The Talisman” in 1987, “Bella Mafia” in 1990 and “Entwined” in 1993.
In 2002, after completing the novel “Royal Flush”, La Plante moved to Simon & Schuster UK. Here she started working on Anna Travis series, which includes “Above Suspicion” that was written in 2004, “The Red Dahlia” in 2005, “Clean Cut” 2007, “Deadly Intent” in 2008, “Silent Scream” in 2009, “Blind Fury” in 2010, “Blood Line” in 2011, “Backlash” in 2012 and “Wrongful Death” in 2013.
Lynda La Plante has written numerous successful novels, among them are “Twisted” that was published in 2014, “Tennison” in 2015, “Hidden Killers” in 2016, “Good Friday” in 2017, “Murder Mile” in 2018, “The Dirty Dozen” in 2019. Presently, Lynda La Plante works and lives in London and Easthampton, New York.
Lynda La Plante has won a number of awards over her career such as BAFTA awards, Prix Italia, British Broadcasting Award, Royal Television Society Writer's Award, and Edgar Allan Poe Award, all for Prime Suspect series.
Lynda was made a Fellow of the British Film Institute in recognition of her outstanding contribution to television culture and was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2008 Queen's Birthday Honors List for her services to literature, drama and to charity.
In 2009 La Plante was inducted into the Crime Thriller Awards Hall of Fame in 2009 and in 2013, she was awarded an Honorary Fellowship with the Forensic Science Society (FSSoc) and Liverpool John Moores University.
