Lyndon attended California Institute of Technology and graduated from it with his B.A.(in physics) in 1962. He also attended the University of California, Berkeley for his Ph.D. (in high-energy physics), which he received in 1966. In his college years he became fascinated with fantasy literature.
Lyndon worked for 30 years at the aerospace company TRW Systems, Redondo Beach, California as an engineer since 1966. He also started a computer consulting company named Alodar Systems Inc. His writing career lasted from 1980 until 1988 and from 2016 till present.
Hardy set up a computer consulting company named Alodar Systems Inc. that, among other things, helped to develop intelligence tools for medical research and enterprise resource planning software for small businesses. In 1961, Hardy masterminded the Great Rose Bowl Hoax, in which Caltech students rearranged the cards used by Washington to spell out words during halftime.
Lyndon married Joan Taresh in 1966. The couple has two daughters.
