Mickelsen studied at Ricks College and Brigham Young University (Brigham Young University). He graduated from Brigham Young University in 1966 with a degree in agricultural economics.
As a young man, he was a missionary in the church"s Central American Mission when it spanned from Guatemala to Panama. After this, Mickelsen operated a potato farm in Idaho and also was involved in shipping potatoes. At the time of his call, he was serving as a temple worker in the Idaho Falls Temple, assigned to work in Spanish.
In 1993, Mickelsen was transferred to the First Quorum of the Seventy.
Beginning in 2004, Mickelsen worked with Jay East. Jensen and Enrique Resek in supervising the preparation and publication of an Latter- Day Saints (Mormons) edition of the Bible in Spanish, using as their base text the Reina-Valera Translation of the Bible.
In 1990, he became a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy.
