From the 1920s to the 1940s, no place was more modern than Shanghai: a veritable playground amid a sea of Asian and European influences; an urban population clamoring for all that was new and Western, but whose aesthetic sensibilities remained profoundly Chinese. In this rich social and cultural history of Shanghai’s art and culture, Lynn Pan guides the reader through the myriad world inhabited by commercial and underground artists and designers, performers, architects, decorators, patrons, as well as politicians, generals, and crime bosses. What emerges is a singular portrait of a city and its art—its life blood, in an era that continues to capture the imagination of art lovers and cultural critics today. Lynn Pan is the best-selling author of Sons of the Yellow Emperor: A History of the Chinese Diaspora; Tracing it Home: A Chinese Journey; and The Encyclopedia of the Chinese Overseas. She lives in Shanghai.

(Down the centuries Chinese craftsmen have worked with cla...)
Down the centuries Chinese craftsmen have worked with clay, wood, bamboo, stone and even gourd to bring humble utilitarian objects to the level of art. The appeal of these objects to the collector - whether birdcage or basket, box or brushpot, plate or bowl, transcends simple nostalgia - lying as it does in their intrinsic beauty as much as in the fact that, transmitted from father to son, the skills with which they have been so finely wrought are in danger of perishing. Richer and more eclectic in examples than have ever been gathered between the covers of a single book before, this lavish collection of more than two hundred folk objects, with a text by Lynn Pan, celebrates the art of the Chinese craftsman.

(An examination of the Chinese emigrant experience, examin...)
An examination of the Chinese emigrant experience, examining the history of Chinese emigration, its effects on emigrants and host nations alike and the culture and achievements of Chinese who have settled abroad. The Chinese diaspora, the most widespread varied and prolonged series of emigrations by one nation, began in the 1500s and continues to this day. This study covers the emigration from China to Britain, Canada, America, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines and ranges in subject from coolies to tycoons and triad bosses, from Fu Manchu to mini-biographies of the real Chinamen, from the origins of chop suey to the truth behind the gambling den myths. It includes topical material on Hong Kong and Tiananmen and the effects of the controversial British immigration policies and an insight into the American "Melting Pot" whose ideal has seldom been upheld, whether by government policy or by disaffected white Americans. Lynn Pan also wrote "In Search of Old Shanghai", "Old Shanghai - Gangsters in Paradise", "China's Sorrow" and "The Chinese Revolution".
