Over the course of her career, Mrs. Cheney has authored or co-authored twelve books. In 1995, she founded American Council of Trustees and Alumni, a think tank devoted to reforming higher education.
Cheney serves as director emerita of the Independent Women's Forum, a right-wing group opposed to "radical feminism," government sponsored childcare, and equal pay for equal work standards for women in government service.
Mrs. Cheney established the James Madison Book Award in April 2003 in an effort to encourage historical knowledge.
As chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1986 to 1993, she published American Memory, a report that warned about the failure of schools to transmit knowledge of the past to upcoming generations.
