Straight from school he joined the police force in 1953 and served in the ranks for 10 years.
After being commissioned in 1963 he was sent on a series of courses to England, first to Hendon Police College in 1964 then later on attachment to British police forces at Leeds and Durham. He was promoted Superintendent of Police in 1967 and then became the first Malawian appointed Deputy Commissioner at the Police Training School.
Following a further training course at Tulliallan he returned to Malawi as Commandant in 1969. The next year he had another command course at Dishforth, Yorkshire, England and became Deputy Commissioner of Police in 1970. A year later President Banda appointed him the first Malawian Commissioner of Police.
