Maarten Claringbould was born in 1949.
Claringbould studied law at Utrecht University, completing his studies in 1973 with the Dutch law qualification mr. Utrecht University was founded on 26 March 1636 and grew out of the Illustrious School of Utrecht, established two years earlier in 1634. It flourished in the seventeenth century and played a prominent role in the golden age of Dutch science, and it remains one of the oldest universities in the Netherlands.
Claringbould was admitted to the bar in the Netherlands in 1975 and began his legal career that year at a renowned Rotterdam maritime law firm. Rotterdam, one of the principal seaports of Europe, provided a setting in which shipping, cargo liability, and carriage contracts formed a central part of legal practice.
In 1995 he was appointed part-time professor of Maritime Law at Leiden University. Founded in 1575 by William of Orange during the Eighty Years' War against Spanish rule, Leiden is the oldest university in the Netherlands. At Leiden he taught master's-level courses in law and civil law.
In 2001 he moved to Van Traa Advocaten, a Rotterdam law firm with a transport and logistics practice group. There he worked as a lawyer and headed the firm's internal Know How Department. He gave his farewell address at Leiden in December 2017, after which he became professor emeritus, and he now serves at Van Traa as of counsel. He is regarded as a leading authority on maritime law.
