Madge Thornall Roberts was an American writer, school teacher as well as university professor.
Background
Mrs. Thornall Roberts was born in Houston, Texas, United States, on December 3, 1929. She is a descendent of Sam Houston, long considered a hero in Texas for the role he played in winning the vast land for the United States. She was born to Clarence Eugene (director, bureau of Motor Carriers, Interstate Commerce Commission) and Marian (Hearne) Thornall.
Education
In 1950 Madge Thornall Roberts finished Southwestern University, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1953 she became a Master of Education, after completing her studies at Trinity University. She did a post-graduate work at Our Lady of the Lake University from 1968 to 1970.
Mrs. Thornall Roberts worked as an elementary school teacher at San Antonio Independent School District, from 1950 to 1972. She was an elementary school teacher at Northside Independent School District, between 1972 and 1990.
Then she started her career of a contributing editor for Cobblestones, children’s magazine. She was a freelance contributor to Houston Post. Since 1993 she acted as a lecturer and guest speaker at Teacher Center UTSA, and from 1973 till 1985 Mrs. Thornall Roberts was a board member. Concurrently she was active in educators’ organizations.
Madge Thornall Roberts joined Alamo Wall of History, permanent outdoor exhibit, working as a chair and author of guide book, and later Academic Center, Sam Houston State University, serving as a member of advisory board. She has been a consultant for television programs, including The Real West (A & E network), Unsolved Mysteries, and documentaries on the Alamo for the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, and A & E. Volunteer work includes Alamo Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library, San Antonio, TX, and the Sam Houston Memorial Museum, Hunstville, TX. Mrs. Thornall Roberts has served as state education chair for the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. She was a member of Mayor Nelson Wolfe’s Alamo Plaza Study Committee.
