The President of the Republic of Hungary since 2000. Madl is considered to be the best expert in the International and European Law in Hungary. His lectures had a success in different foreign universities: The University of California (USA, Berkeley), universities in Salzburg (Austria) and Munich (Germany).

From 1995 Ferenc Madl was the chairman of the Hungarian Committee of National Heritage.

On May, 3, 2000 Madl was nominated candidate for a position of the president of the Republic of Hungary from the parties of the ruling coalition.
In spite of the fact that Madl’s candidacy was endorsed with all political fractions, during the first couple of rounds he couldn’t poll the necessary two thirds of the vote. Only the third round decided the destiny of the president by means of simple majority of votes. 243 from 351 gave their votes “for” in spite the fact, the 14 of them were invalid.
