Mahir has twice fought for the IBF middleweight world title, although he lost both fights. Mahir fought Arthur Abraham for the IBF middleweight world title on Showtime where he lost by 10th round corner stoppage. Mahir fought Sebastian Sylvester on October 30, 2010 for the IBF middleweight world title, where he lost by unanimous decision, and was knocked down three times.
