He was wounded in a car bomb blast in Sidon on May 25, 2006 and died the next day. Islamic Jihad stated that they hold Israel responsible for the bombing, but Israel denied it. In mid-June 2006, Lebanon authorities arrested a group of alleged spies, among them a certain Mahmoud Rafeh, who reportedly confessed to working for Israel and carrying out the attack.
