Farshchian was born in Isfahan, Iran, on January 24, 1930. His father was a rug merchant.
In his early years, Mahmoud Farshyan showed an interest in art. He studied under the supervision of Haji Mirza-Agha Emami and Isa Bahadori for several years. When Farshyan received his diploma from Isfahan's high school for the fine arts, he went to Europe, where he studied the works of the great Western masters of Painting.
Farshchian returned from Europe to Iran and started to work at the National Institute of Fine Arts, which later became the Ministry of Art and Culture. During this period, he held various positions such as the: an administrator of the Department of National Arts; a director of the Department of National arts; an art professor of the University of Tehran’s School of Fine Arts.
He has held 57 individual shows and participated in 86 group shows in Iran, Europe, America and also Asian countries. His main theme is classical Persian poetry. In his artworks he usually depicts human emotions, moods, feelings as well as desires. So Mahmoud Farshchian’s paintings are basically a mix of Persian poetry with human emotions and Farshchian’s imagination. Shams and Rumi is one of his best-known artworks; it has been inspired by one of Rumi’s poems, a 13th-century Persian Sunni Muslim poet, Islamic scholar, and theologian. It took him took two months to complete the painting and it was finally unveiled at the Farshchian Art and Cultural Complex in Isfahan on August 2, 2007.
Farshchian's artworks have been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum, Harvard University, The British Library, Bibliotheque Nationale de France, Freer Gallery of Art and many more distinguished art academies, schools, museums, and galleries. Currently, Farshchian resides in New Jersey.
