TOKER, Maj.- Alliston-Champion was born on December 10, 1843 in Hendon, Middlesex. 3rd son of Philip Champion Toker, Proctor, of Doctors Commons, and Eliza Jeannette, daughter of Arthur Branthwayt, Captain 2nd Dragoon Guards.

Studied at private school. Brighton College; Victoria College, Jersey. Degree of honour and gold medals in Persian and Hindustani.
Passed examinations by the higher standard in Arabic and Sanskrit and in high proficiency in Bengali and Hindi.
Entered Bengal Army, 1860. Captain 1872; Major, 1880. Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel 1882.
Colonel 1886; Major-General 1897. Served in Bhutan Expedition, 1864-1865 (medal and clasp). Egyptian Expedition, 1882, as Deputy Assistant Adjutant-General of Indian Contingent.
Present at Tel-el-Kebir and subsequent pursuit to Zagazig (despatches, medal and clasp, bronze star, 4th class of Osmanieh and Brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel). Commanded 18th Bengal Infy. and Chindwin District in Burma Campaign, 1886-1887 (despatches, two clasps and Companion of the Bath). Received thanks of Commander-in-Chief in India for services in connection with Surveys in the Field.
Cantonment Magistrate, North-Western Provinces, India (Magistrate of 1st class and Justice of the Peace), 1876-1881. Deputy Secretary to Government of India, Military Department, 1887-1892. Superintendent of Army Clothing, Bengal, 1892-1897.
