In 1914 moved to Odessa where he was apprenticed to a photographer. In 1919 joined the Red Army as a volunteer. In 1924 came to Moscow and worked as a photographer on Rabochaia Gazeta.
Specialized exclusively in current news reporting. Took pictures of prominent communists and public figures such as Clara Zetkin, the military commander M. Frunze, Maksim Gorkii and others. 1928, picture editor of Pravda.
Became a prominent photo journalist. From 1931 worked for the USSR in Construction magazine. His most important photographs were of industrial scenes and of the Fergana Canal in particular.
Considered an expert photographer and influenced many young photographers in the USSR. During World War II, war correspondent for TASS, the Soviet Information Office and the Novosti Press Agency.
