Malcolm Fleming is a lawyer based in Glasgow, Scotland, who worked as a partner of the commercial law firm Maclay Murray & Spens and was admitted to the bar in Scotland in 1968. He holds a Cambridge Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws, and he is associated with the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow, one of the oldest legal societies in the United Kingdom.
Education
Fleming studied at the University of Cambridge, where he took the Bachelor of Arts degree, abbreviated B.A. (Cantab.) in academic usage. Cambridge is a collegiate university in Cambridge, England, and its Arts degrees have long formed the first academic stage for students of many disciplines.
He also holds the Bachelor of Laws degree. In Scotland the LL.B. is the academic qualification associated with entry to the legal profession, and it is followed by professional training before a person can practise as a solicitor or advocate.
Career
Fleming worked as a partner of Maclay Murray & Spens, a commercial law firm headquartered in Glasgow. The firm was founded in Glasgow in 1871 by David Maclay, David Murray and John Spens, and it was established as the first law firm in Scotland with a specifically commercial practice. By the time of its combination with the global firm Dentons in 2017, Maclay Murray & Spens had offices in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow and London.
He was admitted to the bar in Scotland in 1968. Scotland's legal profession has traditionally been divided between solicitors, who advise clients and conduct business such as property and commercial transactions, and advocates, who form the Scottish bar and appear in the higher courts.
Membership
Fleming was a member of the Royal Faculty of Procurators in Glasgow. The Faculty was incorporated prior to 1668 and serves the legal profession in Glasgow and West Central Scotland.
The Faculty provides its members with a large law library, which it has maintained since 1817, together with a continuing professional development programme and a city-centre venue for events. Its building on Nelson Mandela Place has housed its collection of legal texts since 1857.
