In 1939, Malcolm Arthur Hoffmann began his career as an attorney at the National Labor Relations Board, a post he held till 1943. He became a special attorney to the appellate section of the criminal division of the United States Department of Justice in 1943 before working as special assistant in the antitrust division to the United States Attorney General from 1944 till 1955.
In 1955, Hoffmann joined the firm of Rosenman, Colin, Kaye, Petschek, Freund and Emil, where he remained until 1959, when he started to work at law firm of Greenbaum, Wolff & Ernst. Also, in 1957, he held the post of a lecturer at the Practising Law Institute. In 1960, Hoffmann opened his own firm, "Malcolm A. Hoffmann", in New York City, where he continued working until his retirement in 1995.
Moreover, he worked as a lecturer - during the period from 1967 till 1971, he lectured on trade problems at the American Management Association; in 1967, Hoffman read lectures at the antitrust section meeting at the American Bar Association in Honolulu, and some time later, in 1976, he lectured during litigation section meeting in San Francisco.
During his career, Malcolm also served as a board chair for the Hoffmann School, a private facility in the Bronx. It was at that time, that Hoffmann began dabbling in writing, when he penned dramas for radio’s Yankee Network. He also wrote a number of legal texts and books of memoirs. These include Government Lawyer, Hoffmann’s Antitrust Laws and Techniques, Back and Forth, Lawyers Heritage, Monopolies, Markets and Mergers, The Long Canoe and Tales of Lawyer Hoffmann.
Also, during his lifetime, Hoffman was a member of Joint Committee on Continuing Legal Education of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Association.
Malcolm was a member of American Bar Foundation, American Bar Association (ex-Vice Chairman of Commission), American Judicature Society, International Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, New York State Bar Association (ex-Chairman of Commission, Executive Committee), New York City Bar Association, Harvard Talk Club (ex-Chaiman).
Hoffman married Anna Luciano Hoffmann on April 13, 1939. Their marriage produced two children — Gertrude Nina Hoffmann and Jessica Ann Hoffmann. Also, Malcolm had five grandchildren and one great-grandson.
