Career
He began service with the House of Commons in 1967. He was appointed Principal Clerk in 1991 and served as secretary to the House of Commons Commission from 1995 to 2001. He then served as Clerk of the Journals (2001-2003) and Clerk of Legislation (2003-2006) before being appointed Clerk of the House of Commons in 2006.
While in this office he was the editor of the 24th edition of Erskine May: Parliamentary Practice (2011).
He was succeeded by Robert Rogers on 1 October 2011. Jack was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath) in the 2011 Birthday Honours.
