This text provides a practical, up-to-date account of the management of thyroid disease. It presents a view of both medical and surgical treatment, and the pathophysiological background. Particular emphasis is given to basic mechanisms, such as thyroid growth and the role of oncogenes in thyroid cancer. The effects of radiation on the thyroid are given high prominence in view of public concern over recent nuclear accidents. Autoimmune thyroid disease constitutes a large part of clinical thyroidology and the background to this disease is emphasized.
