Maneko Iki-no-Atai was born in Japan.
It is said that during the 9th year of the reign of Emperor Ojin (278) he sacrificed himself to save the life of Sukune Take- nouchi who was falsely implicated on some charge. He took Sukune's place at the execution block. This was made possible because of ms close resemblance to Sukune. The latter is said to have been greatly moved by Atai’s bravery.
