Manohar Shetty was educated in Panchgani and graduated from Bombay University in 1974.
After graduating from the university, Manohar Shetty immediately began working as a journalist in 1974. He has been based in Goa since 1985 and then became an editor at "Goa Today" in Goa. Shetty also worked in the media in Bombay and Bangalore too, including with papers such as "Indian Express" (Bombay), "Mid-Day". For his stint as editor of "Goa Today", he succeeded Vaman Sardessai in the post, after the latter was appointed India's ambassador to Angola.
Besides, Manohar Shetty's work has been translated into Finnish, German, Italian, Marathi and Slovenian and is found in several anthologies, including "The Oxford India Anthology of Twelve Modern Indian Poets" edited by Arvind Krishna Mehrotra and anthologies edited by Eunice de Souza, Vilas Sarang and Jeet Thayil. His work has also appeared in The Baffler (United States), the London Magazine, Poetry Review, Poetry Wales, Wasafiri, Chelsea (United States), Rattapallax (United States), Fulcrum (United States), Shenandoah (United States), The Common (United States), New Letters (United States), Helix (Australia).
In addition, Shetty is listed in Sudeep Sen's essay "New Indian Poetry: The 1990s Perspective", published in World Literature Today, Volume 68, Number 2.
As of 2017, Manohar Shetty has published eight volumes of poetry. They are: "A Guarded Space" (1981), "Borrowed Time" (1988), "Domestic Creatures: Poems" (1994), "Body Language" (2012), "Creatures Great and Small" (2014), "Living Rooms" (2014), "Personal Effects" (2015) and "Morning Light" (2016).
Manohar Shetty is an outstanding poet, whose poetry is seen as being an integral part of the "chronology of modern Indian English poetry". One of his most famous works is "Ferry Crossings", included in "The Oxford India Anthology of Twelve Modern Indian Poets".
In addition, he was awarded prestigious Homi Bhaba Fellowship and Sahitya Akademi Fellowship.
Manohar Shetty has written an account of his personal encounter with alcohol in the book "House Spirit: Drinking in India - Stories, Essays, Poems".
Shetty has been based in Goa since 1985. He is based in Dona Paula, a suburb some seven kilometres from the state-capital of Panaji in Goa. He is married to Devika Sequeira. The couple has two children: Shaira Sequeira Shetty and Riya Sequeira Shetty.
