He was educated in public schools, and at the age of 17 he joined the ultimately successful revolution against the regime of Victoriano Huerta.
Ávila Camacho was skilled in negotiation and was a moderate social reformer. He resolved Mexico's former troubles with foreign investors, and he negotiated settlements of most of the difficulties that had estranged the United States and Mexico.
During World War II he cooperated closely with the United States and its allies.
Ávila Camacho was succeeded in the presidency in 1946 by Miguel Alemán and then retired to private life.
