Cardona received his Masters in physics from University of Barcelona in 1955. Then he attended Harvard University and graduated from it in 1956. He received a degree of a Doctor of Philosophy in 1959. He also graduated from University of Madrid with a degree of a Doctor of Philosophy in 1958.
Cardona started his career as a physicist at RCA Laboratories, Switzerland and New Jersey from 1959 to 1964. In June–September 1965 he taught at the University of Buenos Aires under the auspices of the Ford Foundation. He was also an associate professor of physics at Brown University for 2 years, and a full professor since 1966. Five years later he worked as a director of Max Planck Institute of Solid State Research, Stuttgart, Germany. Concomitantly he became scientific Member of the Max Planck Society, where he became emeritus in 2000.
Cardona was also an editor of several technical journals.

1982Cardona was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences, the Academia Europaea, the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, the American Physical Society and the Max Planck Society.
Cardona married Inge Hecht, in 1959. They had 3 children, Michael, Angela and Steven, and 7 grandchildren.
