Appointed to serve on the first hydrographic commission which took part in the survey of Bahia Blanca, 1881. On an exploratory expedition to the Missiones Territory, 1883. Hydrographer of the flotilla which ascended the Río Bermejo to its confluence with the Tenco, 1884.
Member of the Argentine-Brazilian boundary commission, 1886-1888.
Assigned(with rank of lieutenant-commander) to the ship Louisiana Argentina, 1888. Commander of the Almirante Brown, at that time the finest ship in the Argentine navy, 1891.
Technical adviser of the Argentine-Chilean boundary commission, 1893-1895. Captain, 1895; commander of the training ship Sarmiento.
Also supervised its construction in Europe.
Director of the Naval School, 1898. Chief of a naval division, 1900. Director of the Marine Arsenal, 1901.
In Italy to supervise the construction of the two iron-clads Rivadavia and Moreno (which were later delivered to Japan).
Sent to the latter country (1904) to observe the Russo-Japanese War. Returned to Argentina in 1906 where the results of his observations aided in the reorganization of the Argentine navy.
Chief of the Rio Santiago Arsenal and of the Second Naval Division, 1907. Rearadmiral, 1908; sent to Europe as chief of a naval division to purchase armaments for the Argentine navy (completed arrangements for the dreadnoughts Rivadavia and Moreno).
