From 1912 to 1918 Manuel studied at the Instituto Nacional in Chile. In 1922 he was a student of the University de Chile in Santiago, Chile. He studied at the faculty of agricultural engineering. From 1931 to 1932 Manuel studied at the University of California in Berkeley, California, United States. In 1932 Manuel studied at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, United States.
Since 1933 Manuel worked as a professor of genetics at the school of agriculture at the University de Chile in Santiago, Chile. In this year he became a chief of the experimental station of the Society Nacional de Agricultura. He worked there for six years. In 1939 he worked as a director of the department of genetics at the Ministry of agriculture. In 1940 Manuel was a delegate of the Pan American Scientific Congress in Washington, United States.
Manuel married to Juana Zunino. They have five children: Manuel, Jorge, Juan, Sergio, and Federico.
