He is the head of research and teaching at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Studio Basel: Contemporary City Institute and teaches at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design with Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron. Herz has published extensively on issues of diaspora and architecture. Currently, he is researching planning strategies of refugee camps and the dilemma of humanitarian action." He presented an academic paper at the Holcim Forum for Sustainable Construction 2007, organized by the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction.
