In Marc Harshman's prize-winning collection, actual war, age, and disaster mingle with dream and hallucinatory sadness to produce an edgy sweetness few American poets have managed to give us. The voices of the lost, and found, are strangely like our own, and the stories they tell, or imply, are familiar without ever seeming the least bit stale or contrived.

1989“I believe our language holds the power to challenge and persuade, comfort, inform, and ultimately to reveal truths about who we are. Through our language, the best of who we are is preserved. An artist’s manipulation of words through rhythms, images, and countless other figures is a high calling. It is my duty to remind others that the language is their language, a living thing renewed by what they- its speakers and writers - bring to it. As a children’s writer, I also see an opportunity to promote a vision of writing and storytelling that is natural to everyday living, giving children a means of responding to the world.”
Harshman is a member of Society of Children's Book Writers, Poets & Writers, Inc., West Virginia English Language Arts Council, Union Literature Institute, International Reading Association.
Marc married Cheryl Ryan on August 25, 1976. They have one daughter Sarah Jayne.
