Horowitz was born in Columbus, Ohio, United States, on July 19, 1976.
At age seventeen, Marc Horowitz started to attend Indiana University Bloomington, receiving his degree in Business Marketing and Microeconomics in 1998. He continued his education at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he studied painting. He left the institute in 2001.
Horowitz completed his Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Southern California in 2012. There, he studied with Charlie White, Evan Holloway, Sharon Lockhart, and Frances Stark.
Horowitz and Jon Brumit, his longtime collaborator, decided to build their business team known as Sliv & Dulet Enterprises in 2003. They opened an office in downtown San Francisco (at New Langton Arts). They invited 30 artists of various backgrounds to their company to help them "develop a summer line of products and services," which they pitched to local businesses.
Horowitz gained national attention around 2005, while working on a catalogue shoot for Crate & Barrel. He wrote "Dinner w/ Marc" along with his cell number on a dry-erase board featured in a home office shot for the catalogue. When the catalogue came out, more than 30,000 people called Horowitz. The following year he spent driving across the country and having dinner with individuals who invited him. This project he entitled "The National Dinner Tour".
In 2007 he held an exhibition "More Better" at AMT Gallery in Como, Italy, "The Center for Improved Living" at Galerie Analix Forever in Geneva, Switzerland, and "Breakthrough" at Nuke Gallery in Paris, France. In 2008, Horowitz presented "The Me and You Show" at the established Hayward Gallery in London, England.
Marc Horowitz completed The Signature Series in the summer of 2008. It chronicled his journey across the United States. During his trip, the artist made 19 stops. At one of his stops, he started his artwork Anonymous Semi-nudist Colony in Nampa, Idaho. For his last stop on the series, he stopped at Wrightsville Beach where he froze a briefcase in the middle of a 7-foot-tall (2.1 m) patriotic ice sculpture and challenged passers-by to guess when they think the ice would melt. The winner of the challenge received that suitcase with a surprise inside. Horowitz filmed his whole trip and uploaded the videos on YouTube.
In December 2008, Marc Horowitz attempted to provide financial assistance to the American banks by creating artworks that he gave to different banks to sell at auctions.
Horowitz broadcast his life live 24/7 on the internet for a live audience known as Talkshow 247 from November 2008 till February 2009. During these four months, he was moved out from his apartment, hitchhiked across Los Angeles, married his girlfriend and had several death threats from his downstairs neighbour.
Peter Baldes and Marc Horowitz made the first virtual live-streaming broadcast cross-country road trip between August 10 and August 18, 2009, calling it "Google Maps Road Trip." They drove from Los Angeles to Richmond, Virginia, using only Google Maps. Later they were interviewed by NPR Weekend Edition where Baldes and Horowitz tell about their innovative "vacation."
With support from Creative Time, Horowitz started a new project. He crowdsourced his daily decisions on the "The Advice of Strangers" website, which operated in November 2010. People were able to visit the site and vote in real time on the choices he made every day.
During the following years, Marc Horowitz lectured at Yale University, California Institute of the Arts, University of California in Berkeley, and Portland State University. In November 2012, Horowitz was invited to do a TEDx talk in Lake Como, Italy. His film "Moving" became an official selection of the 2014 Slamdance Film Festival. He has taught at Otis College of Art and Design and the University of California in the new media departments.
Horowitz released hCoin, his virtual "crypto" currency and e-commerce site, in 2015. The same year, he moved away from internet-based work, video and performance and decided to return to painting. His first large scale painting exhibit was held at the Depart Foundation in Los Angeles.
