Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, he played for the youth squads of a number of Scottish teams before being offered professional terms with Livingston aged 16. Having made over 100 appearances for Livingston he joined English side Sheffield United in the summer of 2014. Livingston After being released by Hibernian at age 16 it affected McNulty, with him believing he "wasn"t going to make it in football" and "it was over".
His prolific goal scoring record at under-19 level earned him a new three-year contract on 17 February 2010.
In all he made nine appearance in his debut season in the first team The following season in the Second Division he made only four appearances in an injury troubled campaign.
Season 2011-2012 saw him emerge as Livingston"s top goal scorer back in the First Division, netting 16 goals in all competitions. His form saw him attract the attention of clubs south of the border such as Sheffield United and Derby County.
He extended his stay with Livingston on 25 July 2013 by signing a new two-year contract.
Sheffield United On 19 May 2014, McNulty joined Sheffield United on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee which would become effective on 1 July 2014. The transfer fee is believed to be between £95,000 and £125,000. In November 2014, McNulty was ruled out as injured after sustaining a facial injury after an "altercation" in a night club in Edinburgh, with United manager Nigel Clough claiming that McNulty was the "innocent party".
On 16 December 2014, McNulty scored the only goal in a 1–0 home victory over Southampton to send United to the semi-finals of the League Cup.
Louis Reed a young promising midfielder slid the ball through two QPR defenders and McNulty ran on to the ball with a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, McNulty kept his cool and slotted the ball through the goalkeeper"s legs, it was his ninth goal of the season in all competitions. Portsmouth On 6 November 2015, McNulty joined Portsmouth on a short term loan deal.
On 7 November 2015 he made his debut in the first round game against Macclesfield Town, with Portsmouth winning the game 2–1. On 4 January 2016, McNulty"s loan at Portsmouth was extended until the end of the season after scoring six goals in 11 appearances.
He played a starring role in the fourth round against Bournemouth on 30 January 2016 when he set up the only Portsmouth goal.
