In 1821 moved with father to farm at Allen’s Hill, Ontario County, New New York Graduate Union College, 1836.
Taught classics and mathematics 6 months in Highland Gymnasium, Fishkill Landing, 1837. In Collegiate School, Poughkeepsie, reading law meanwhile, 1837-1841. Principal Canandaigua Academy, 1849-1853.
Was offered presidency of Vassar Woman’s College at its founding, 1861.
Admitted to bar, 1841. Practiced until attacked by bronchitis, caused by public speaking.
Subsequently turned his attention mostly to authorship. His works have brought him royalties, in all, about $250,000, from the Harpers alone over $200,000.
