This book is an interesting addition to the voluminous biographical literature of the war that has been made in the Memoirs of Robert E. Lee. General A. L. Long of the Confederate Army was a friend and fellow-soldier of Lee. This large volume has been written under great difficulties, the author having lost his sight; but, like some more eminent American historians who have worked under similar disadvantages, he has not slighted his task, but has made diligent use of a great body of material. The work is not autobiographical, of course, but makes large use of the words and records of General Lee. Its value rests in its full, clear, and enthusiastic presentation of the character and career of one of the most remarkable men of a great epoch. Included are also the full official Reports of Gen. Lee with copious selections from his confidential letters, dispatches, and official communications never before published—the only official record of the closing years of the war.

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Marcus Wright, Sr. was born on June 5, 1831, in Purdy, Tennessee, the son of Benjamin C. Wright and Martha Ann Hicks. His grandfather, John Wright, a native of Savannah, Georgia, served as a captain in the Revolutionary War. His father, also of Savannah, fought as an officer of the 39th United States Infantry in the Creek War and later in the War with Mexico.
Wright, Sr. was educated in the academy at Purdy.
After studying law, he moved to Memphis, where he became clerk of the common law and chancery court. He served as lieutenant-colonel of the 154th Infantry, Tennessee militia, which was armed and equipped several years before the Civil War, and entered the Confederate service with this regiment in April 1861. In 1862 he acted as military governor of Columbus, Kentucky. In 1862 he received promotion to the rank of brigadier-general (confirmed, April 22, 1863). He commanded his regiment in the battles of Belmont and at Shiloh, where he was wounded. Recovered, he led a brigade in the campaign around Chattanooga, November 1863. He was also active in the defense of Atlanta until the Confederate evacuation of that city, when he assumed command of Macon, Georgia. In December 1864 he was appointed to organize forces in west Tennessee, and in the early part of 1865 he was assigned to the command of the district of north Mississippi and west Tennessee. He surrendered at Grenada, Mississippi, and retired to law practice in Memphis, where for some time he also acted as assistant purser of the United States navy yard. On July 1, 1878, he was appointed by the United States government as agent for the collection of Confederate archives, in which service he continued until his retirement in June 1917. It was largely as a result of his tactful efforts that the attitude of Southerners toward the compiling and editing of the Civil War papers became more cordial, and he succeeded in obtaining many records that had been concealed. This work very materially aided in the publication of the extremely valuable collection, War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Wright, Sr. contributed articles to the publications of the Southern History Association and the American Historical Association. He was also the author of a number of books, among them Reminiscences of the Early Settlement and Early Settlers of McNairy County, Tenn. (1882), Some Account of the Life and Services of William Blount (1884), Great Commanders: General Scott (1894), The Official and Pictorial Record of American Expansion (1904), Tennessee in the War, 1861-1865 (1908), General Officers of the Confederate Army (1911).
Marcus Joseph Wright, Sr. died on December 27, 1922, in Washington, D. C. , and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery on the south side of the Confederate Memorial.

Marcus Wright, Sr. was twice married. His first wife was Martha Spencer Elcan, by whom he had two children. His second wife was Pauline Womack, they had three children.
Martha Ann Hicks was married to Herbert Harwell, by whom she had a daughter, Julia. She also was married to Benjamin C. Wright, the couple had two children.
John Vines Wright was an American politician.
