She received her bachelor"s degree in English literature from Reed College in 1976. She lives in Tigard, Oregon. Her books are published in English, French, Swedish and Korean.
She teaches in the Master of Fine Arts in Writing for Children and Young Adults program at Vermont College of Fine Arts.

In 1996, Star Hatchling, a middle grade novel about first contact, received the Eleanor Cameron Award, a Golden Duck Award for Excellence in Children"s Science Fiction.
