That Great Lucifer: A Portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh (1960).
( First published in 1953, the first five stories in this...)
First published in 1953, the first five stories in this collection are stories from Ireland, exploring the dark history of the country and the dogged optimism of its people. The following four tales are of the uncanny - striking studies of witchcraft and black magic, evoking a strange haunting atmosphere illustrating the power of evil and its effect on the imagination. 'Mrs. Oliver Cromwell' is a revealing glimpse of the Lord Protector through the eyes of his homely unassuming wife, unhappy in the unaccustomed grandeur thrust upon her by circumstances. The last story 'Where beauty lies' is an eighteenth century frolic over a nobleman's choice of bride.

The heroine is Princess Henrietta of England, known to family as Minette. She is the Duchess of Orleans, and linked dramatically to the fate of her brother, Charles II, and that of her cousin, Louis XIV.

( From an acclaimed master of historical fiction, a capti...)
From an acclaimed master of historical fiction, a captivating series that is "vivid and psychologically brilliant." -Times Literary Supplement, UK In July 1553, sibling rivalry looms perilous, even life-threatening, between the daughters of King Henry VIII. Their brother King Edward is dead, his successor Lady Jane Grey has been beheaded, and Queen Mary Tudor has just won possession of the throne. But her younger half sister-the beautiful and vivacious Princess Elizabeth-holds the hearts of the people. Despite Mary's health fading fast and her power beginning to crumble, she won't give up the throne, determined to rule to the absolute end as her father did before her. In these treacherous times, when all about her there is secrecy and deception, Elizabeth must rely on her faith and courage if she is to survive her ordeal and rise to fulfill her destiny. With grace and elegance, Margaret Irwin continues the story begun in Young Bess, giving readers an intimate peek into the world of that most enigmatic of Britain's monarchs. "I doubt if anyone could create more perfectly than Miss Irwin the illusion of a vanished age." -Observer "Margaret Irwin's books have an unsurpassed colour and gusto." -Times What Readers Are Saying "It is factually accurate and puts you in the center of the action, and her writing style makes the characters seem vividly real and gets the reader emotionally involved."

(From Inside Flap: The Stranger Prince is Rupert of the R...)
From Inside Flap: The Stranger Prince is Rupert of the Rhine, perhaps the most fascinating knight-errant to have crossed - and nearly turned - the current of English history. The third son of Elizabeth of Bohemia and the luckless Elector Palatine, he lost his chance of a kingdom in his infancy and fought thereafter always in the cause of others - for his elder brother, whom he hated, and for his uncle, Charles I of England. From this rich career of adventure Miss Irwin has fashioned more than a history of the Civil War, more even than a biography of the reckless fightr called a 'wizard' for his skill in science and the arts; she has portrayed in the round, against the dramatic background of his age, a complex human being who was the model of a fast-dying chivalry, a man whose life was a voyage of discovery and who carried the spirit of adventure in him to the end. "From an acclaimed master of historical fiction, the final book in a captivating series that is "vivid and psychologically brilliant." -Times Literary Supplement, UK Philip, prince of Spain, the unwilling bridegroom of Queen Mary, has been warned about the queen's half-sister Elizabeth. According to all reports, she is a heretic, a rebel, and a potential enemy, and has a "spirit full of enchantment." Philip is immediately intrigued. Idolized by his aging wife, Philip holds the power to save the young princess, who has been accused of treachery by Mary and is under threat of death. The brilliant Elizabeth must walk the razor-thin line between Bloody Mary's jealousy and Philip's uneasy ardor. The final book in Irwin's timeless trilogy, Elizabeth and the Prince of Spain follows the triumphs and tragedies, the battles of wit and will, between Henry VIII's spirited daughters. "Brimming with vivid period details... Irwin depicts the iconic daughter of King Henry VIII and the beheaded Anne Boleyn with impeccable grace." -Publishers Weekly "I doubt if anyone could create more perfectly than Miss Irwin the illusion of a vanished age." -Observer What Readers Are Saying "A very elaborate chess game, with two highly intelligent people plotting every move with precision. Philip is a cold, emotionless man...whereas Elizabeth is fire itself. The novel also brilliantly shows how dangerous Tudor England was for a royal woman who was considered a very real danger to her sister's rule."
