In 1976, Orbell began working as a lecturer at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, where she later was appointed an associate professor of Maori, holding the post until 1995. Immediately after her retirement, Margaret left for her native Auckland, where she became a full-time writer.
Also, Orbell translated Maori-language texts and traditional poetry of Polynesia. Moreover, during her lifetime, she researched material for a book, dealing with certain widespread patterns of imagery, that are discoverable in the poetry and mythology of the Polynesians and other tribal peoples.
