Princess Margarita was born at Schloss Salem, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on 14 July 1932 and grew up there. Her father ran a school jointly with Kurt Hahn.

She was a niece of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. She came to live in London in 1948, and trained as a nurse at Street Thomas" Hospital. Following the death of Lady Katherine Brandram in 2007 she became the senior direct line female descendant of Queen Victoria.
Princess Margarita experienced ill-health in her later years.
Princess Margarita died in Farnham, Surrey, on 15 January 2013 after a long illness. Her uncle the Duke of Edinburgh, the Queen of the Hellenes and the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Yugoslavia were among the mourners.
Princess Margarita was buried in the family cemetery at Stefansfeld near Baden, Germany, on 28 January 2013.
While in London, she met Prince Tomislav, a member of the exiled Yugoslav royal family.
