Mari A. Firkatyan studied at the University of Rouen with a Bachelor of Arts in 1980, and then continued his studies at the University of Connecticut and in 1982 received a Bachelor of Arts degree (in French and Russian). She graduated from the University of Indiana with a master of arts (Slavic languages and literature) in 1984, and in 1991 she became a doctor of philosophy. She also studied at the Leningrad State University, the Badan Institute and the University of Venice.
Mari started her career from 1987 at Auburn University as an instructor of history and she has held this position till 1996. She also worked at University in Bulgaria in Blagoevgrad as an assistant professor of history during 1992-1994. Since 1996, she is a history teacher at the University of Hartford.
