Maria Costa is a partner of Noronha Advogados. The firm was founded in 1978 and describes itself as having a tradition in international law.
The firm's early years coincided with military rule in Brazil, a period in which, by its own account, it found growth difficult to sustain. The firm adopted a policy of not representing government companies. Its 20th-anniversary account describes the decision by its then twelve partners to establish a commercial presence in London, intended to help Brazilian companies reach international financial markets.
The firm's offices extend beyond Brazil, with branches in Argentina, China, the United States, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. It was one of the first law firms in the world to establish itself in China, in 2000. In Brazil it previously had offices in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and now maintains only the São Paulo office.
