Career
Maria married Captain William Grant in 1873 and sailed the world with him untilthey settled in Victoria British Columbia in 1886. In March 1895 Maria was elected as the first school board trustee and served for six years. In 1901 she was presented to George V (then still the Duke of York) as the first and only woman school trustee in Canada.
She was active in the Woman"s Christian Temperance Union and helped to found the Victoria Local Council of Women in 1894 which was created to work towards women"s suffrage.
