Marian Gibney is an Australian lawyer based in Brisbane, Queensland. She was admitted to the Queensland bar in 1983 and is documented as a partner of Feez Ruthning, a long-established Brisbane law firm. She studied at the University of Queensland, where she completed Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degrees.
Education
Marian Gibney studied at the University of Queensland, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws with honours.
The University of Queensland was established by an Act of the Queensland Parliament on 10 December 1909, marking the fiftieth anniversary of Queensland's separation from New South Wales. Proposals for a Queensland university had been put forward since the 1870s, and early planning stressed practical instruction and the university's importance for the commerce of the colony. Its first classes were held in 1911.
Career
Following her admission to the Queensland bar in 1983, Gibney practised law in Brisbane as a partner of Feez Ruthning. The firm traces its origins to 1846, when the newly admitted solicitor Robert Little commenced practice in the small settlement at Moreton Bay, twelve years before Queensland became a separate colony.
The practice developed through successive partnerships. Arthur Feez carried on the firm under his own name until 1905, when Arthur Baynes joined him, and Adalbert Ruthning came into the firm in 1912. The firm adopted the name Feez Ruthning & Co. in 1927, and the Co. designation was dropped in 1986. The firm later became part of Allens.
