She was consecrated as the ninth Bishop of Washington in the Washington National Cathedral on November 12, 2011. Budde completed her undergraduate work at the University of Rochester, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in history magna cum laude in 1982. She received her Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from the Virginia Theological Seminary.
In May 2012, she was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from the same seminary.
Budde is the author of Gathering up the Fragments: Preaching as Spiritual Practice.
