Richmond, Virginia. The capital of the Confederacy. Here lived one of the greatest threats to the Confederate war efforts. In an unremarkable house on Church Street, Elizabeth Van Lew, a spinster thought to be unconventional, was the center of the Union Army's underground spy network.

As the American Civil War heats up south of the border, Southern Confederates flood into Montreal and Halifax, among them numerous spies and military officers planning secret missions against the Union. Erryn Shaw is a charming British aristocrat who has been banished to the colonies and now wants nothing more than to run a theatre.

1862: The Union holds Baltimore, but this city, with its southern attitudes and divided sentiments, is a port of enormous potential value to the Confederate cause. Defending Baltimore is a man disdainfully called the "Black German." Branden Rolfe, a European revolutionary, fled the oppression of his home in Austria and now serves freedom as the city's Union Provost Marshal. When Rolfe learns of the Sons of Liberty, a secret group of secessionists determined to capture Baltimore, he fears their success could alter the course of the conflict.

Marie was born August 27, 1941, in Fairview, Peace River Country of Northern Alberta, Canada. Her parents are Simon Nicholas Jakober and Kathryn Garrecht. She had the older sister, Peggy O'Brien (Edmonton).
Jakober’s first novel, The Mind Gods was published in 1976, the book follows the demise of Utopia and fleshes out the characters who bring about Utopia's fall. According to T. A. Shippey of the Times Literary Supplement the book contains “a well articulated personal philosophy.” In 1982 and 1983, Jakober, a Canadian, traveled to Nicaragua to witness firsthand the political upheaval that was occurring there. The result of these visits was Sandinista: A Novel of Nicaragua, a radical departure from the fantasy style of Jakober’s first published work. Writing for Queen’s Quarterly, reviewer Larry Towell calls Sandinista “a tightly systematic novel” that is “poetic and thematically accurate.”
In the 1980s, Marie was involved in activist work with Latin American exile communities in solidarity with Central American struggles of that era. Marie was proud of her work at the University of Calgary Library where she was employed for many years.
Jakober continued the story of Nicaragua’s revolution with A People in Anns, published in 1990. The main themes of the novel are the political messages contained in the words and deeds of the characters.
Marie Jakober passed away on March 26, 2017 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 75 years.
