Allen received a BA at Vassar, Poughkeepsie, New York, and an MFA in Painting at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, 1965. She has studied photography with Harold Feinstein, Philippe Halsman and Lisette Model.
To date a freelance photographer, from 1972 to 1975 she was coordinator of documentation, NYC Dept, of Cultural Affairs; from 1967 to 1968 she worked as photographer, researcher and graphic designer for the State Museum of New Jersey, Trenton. She is a member of Professional Women Photographers, NYC.
Allen won a prize at the international "Photo Univers 1978" Exhibit, and received a gubernatorial citation for her work exhibited in the 1979 "Celebration: New York in Color."
The artist works in both color and black-and- white. Her images concentrate on performances, events, people in their environments, and flowers. She is particularly interested in "surreal juxtapositions and painterly effects."
