Warning: This is not another book for cat lovers. Rather, it is a book by a woman who has seen a good cross-section of the world and has assembled many of her observations and experiences in a short story album. Marilyn Schoefer Wagner's Cats & Other Tales: Stories About People is a collection of compelling and haunting portraits, many of them showing women and children in crisis conditions. Some of the scenes are American, many are foreign, some urban, some rural, all reflecting the diverse experiences the author has had as a Stanford graduate, teacher, corporate wife, mother, and world traveler. Wagner's stories are carefully and vividly written-as picture-clear and memorable as well-crafted art films. Many of them show differences between Western and Eastern cultures in a style that combines headline news writing with literary craftsmanship. The tales are often dark, but not without the redeeming features of the author's wit and her characters' determination.
