Mr. Cesariny was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on August 9, 1923. He was the youngest child and only son of Viriato de Vasconcelos and María de las Mercedes Cesariny.
Mário Cesariny attended the Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio and also studied music under the guidance of the composer Fernando Lopes Graça. Later he joined the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris.
Mr. Cesariny joined the French surrealist movement and was a big supporter of the movement in Portugal. There he started the Lisbon Surrealist Movement with such Portuguese artists as Alexandre O'Neill and José-Augusto França.
When he got acquainted with the surrealist movement, Mário Cesariny left the neorealist movement, though it was very important at the time in the country because it generally consisted of opponents of the fascist-leaning regime of Oliveira Salazar. He accepted a principle of constant experimenting, which was a characteristic feature of his work throughout his career.
From 1960 until April 25, 1974, Mr. Cesariny was constantly harassed by the Portuguese Polícia Judiciária for being a suspect of homosexuality. This fact was depicted in some of his writings in a veiled way ("Lisboa-os-Sustos"). Besides, it was one of the causes of his frequent stayings in France and Great Britain during the 1960s and 1970s. Later he confirmed it publicly.
In the 1980s Mário Cesariny completely stopped writing poetry. Starting from this period he dedicated himself solely to painting. Mr. Cesariny refused to separate art from life, which seemed to be the distinguishing mark of the Surrealism movement.
