Quotations: “My motivation for writing is a childlike impulse to multiply characters and twist the language. I write only at night while every movement outside is suspended. I need the maximum amount of silence. Sometimes I am inspired by a sentence heard on the bus, sometimes by insomnia, when a person begins to imagine things.”
De Carvalho is a member of the Portuguese Society of Authors and a member of the board of directors of the Portuguese Association of Writers.
De Carvalho married Maria Helena Taborda Duarte on August 3, 1969. They produced two children - Ava Margorida de Carvalho and Rita Taborda Duarte.
