Mario Garcia Joya was born on July 28, 1938 in Havana, Cuba.
Mario Joya studied at at the Cuban Institute of Film, Art and Industry (1963-1964) San Alejandro Fine Arts Academy (1955-1957), all in Havana.
Director of photography at the Cuban Institute of Film and Industry in Havana (since 1961), Mario García Joya organized the Cuban exhibitions "Recontres Internationales de Photographie" in Arles, France (1978), and the first Latin-American sampling of contemporary photography in Mexico (1977). In 1967 Mario García Joya worked as a photographer at the Cuban Pavillion Exhibition at Expo '67 in Montreal, Canada, and from 1963 to 1965 he was a photographer for Cuba magazine.

2017Mario García Joya has belonged to the Cuban Union of Writers and Artists since 1960, in 1980 serving as its secretary; he was previously president of the photography section (1978-1980).
