Foreign more than 30 years he was a professor of English at the University of Georgia. They have five children. He received his Bachelor of Arts (1950) and Master of Arts (1953) from the University of Georgia and did postgraduate work in creative writing at the University of Iowa (1956-1958).
Montgomery died in Crawford, Georgia at the age of eighty-six.
