Since 1993 he has lived and worked in the Netherlands. Kanie fled Iraq in 1993. His thesis is titled: Martyrdom between nation and religion.
He teaches in the department of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Jewish studies at the same university.
Four of his books have been published in Kurdistan. He publishes in the Kurdish newspapers Hawlati and Awena, and in January 2011 was indicted in Iraqi Kurdistan for an article in Awena that criticized president Massoud Barzani.
He also regularly publishes in the Dutch daily newspaper Trouw and appears on television in the news commentary programs Nova and Netwerk.
