Mark John Bly

Background

Mark John Bly was born on February 1, 1949, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, United States. He is the son of Myrle S. and Lois L. Bly.

Education

Bly graduated from the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities with a bachelor's degree in 1974 and received his master's degree from Boston College in 1977. Bly then also earned a Master of Fine Arts degree at Yale University in 1980.

Career

Bly devoted his career to working as a dramatist at Yale University. He started there as a script reader at Yale Repertory Theater in 1977, and from 1981 to 1990, was a literary manager at Seattle Repertory Theater, Tyrone Guthrie Theater, and Arena Stage, Washington.

Since 1992 and until his retirement, Bly has held the position of associate artistic director and adjunct professor of drama at Yale Repertory Theater. During his career, he also served as a co-chairperson of Department of Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism, and as a chairperson of Playwriting Department at Yale University.
