Mark Greaney was born in 1967 in Memphis, Tennessee. He is a son of Ed Greaney, a representative of the WMC-TV Memphis for over 50 years and the namesake for the station's current newsroom.
Mark Greaney received a degree in International Relations and Political Science.
Before starting his writing career, Greaney worked as a waiter and bartender for ten years, then later in a surgical technology company, while working on two novels in his spare time. After finishing one of them, titled Goon Squad and was primarily about the aftermath of the Bosnian civil war, he gave the first 20 pages of his work to his favorite author Ralph Peters's agent, Scott Miller, in a book conference in September 2006. Miller liked the book but later did not go forward with it, saying that "it was unmarketable," according to Greaney. But he urged Greaney to write another one based from a character in Goon Squad named Court Gentry, which would later be The Gray Man. After finishing this novel, Miller agreed to represent him, and later found a publisher, Jove Books.
After the national success of The Gray Man Greaney quit his job in the medical devices company and make the transition to becoming a full-time writer. He was later given a three-book deal by his publisher in 2009. In addition, The Gray Man's success spawned an equally successful series, with six more sequels as of 2018: On Target (2010), Ballistic (2011), Dead Eye (2013), Back Blast (2016), Gunmetal Gray (2017), Agent in Place (2018), and Mission Critical (2019). The rights to The Gray Man is currently owned by Sony Pictures and is awaiting optioning. This novel is being adapted into a motion picture by Sony and Columbia Pictures and tied to director Joe Roth.
As of March 2015, Greaney has published nine novels, including four novels in the Gray Man series: On Target (2010), and Dead Eye (2013), three direct collaborations with Tom Clancy: Locked On (2012), Threat Vector (Jack Ryan, Jr) (2013), Command Authority (Jack Ryan) (2013), and two books continuing Clancy's Jack Ryan universe: Tom Clancy Support and Defend (A Jack Ryan Jr Novel) (2014) and Tom Clancy Full Force and Effect (A Jack Ryan Novel) (2014) Another book in the Gray Man series, Back Blast, was published in 2016.
Mark continues to reside in Memphis, Tennessee along with his family.

2012Greany did not develop an interest in writing, until he took a class in international terrorism in college. It was in this class that he got an idea for a story, but a complete manuscript did not develop from this initial idea or his next several ideas. However, Greany credits these first ideas as seeds for the Gray Man series, which did not materialize for almost 20 years.
Many readers applaud Greaney’s accuracy and realism within the Gray Man novels. Instead of reading about firearms, foreign countries, and the inner-workings of the Pentagon, to use as research for his books, Greany opted to experience the things he writes about first hand. As a result, he has traveled to more than 15 countries around the world, trained with the military and police for firearm, close-range fighting techniques, and battlefield medicine. He has also visited a variety of intelligence agencies in Washington, D.C. and has spent time in the Pentagon.
Quotations: “I’ve always been interested in both current events and history, and I think it gives a lot of realism to a story to stay as close to ‘real world’ in my fiction. I do depart from fact when the fiction requires it, but often my fiction is just dramatizations of things I’ve read about and sewn together to make a fun story.”
Mark Greaney states that he has met so many interesting people while working on their projects. Being heavily involved in the first-hand experience in many activities, such as scuba diving, military training, traveling all over the world, shooting firearms has also helped him become a better researcher and has helped him give his stories more depth.
Mark lives in Memphis, Tennessee with his family and two Catahoula Leopard dogs, Lobo and Ziggy.
