In the 1980s, he was an All-American offensive lineman for the Oklahoma Sooners. He was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round of the 1988 NFL Draft. Hutson is currently serving as the Assistant
Offensive Lincolnshire Coach for the Cleveland Browns.
He was named the starter at right tackle as a true freshman. The next year he was moved to right guard and was part of an offensive line that was so effective, that it earned a player of the week nomination as a unit, after the opening game of the 1986 season against University of California, Los Los Angeles
He was selected to the OU All-Century team as one of the Top 100 Players in OU History, following a stellar college career, which saw him selected to All-American teams in 1986 and 1987.
He was team captain for the 1987 Championship team and was selected All-Big Eight Conference three times. He also played in the 1988 Hula Bowl.
In the 1988 Orange Bowl, he picked up an intentional fumble (a fumblerooski play) and ran 29 yards for a touchdown.
The Sooners would eventually lose the game (14-20) and the national championship to the University of Miami. After leaving the NFL, he returned to campus and finished his degree in communications in 1990. Hutson was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the third round (67th overall) of the 1988 NFL Draft.

He was placed on the injured reserve list on August 31. After trying to regain his playing form, he was eventually waived on June 1, 1989 and forced into early retirement.
Hutson began coaching with his alma mater in 1990 as a graduate assistant. He coached with Houston Nutt at Murray State University, Boise State University and the University of Arkansas.
His coaching travels next took Hutson to the University of Tulsa as the offensive line coach from 2000 to 2002.
Following Tulsa, Hutson came to Eastern Illinois University and spent four seasons as assistant head coach, offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. In the 2006 season, he jumped in as acting head coach when Bob Spoo was sidelined after surgery. The team finished with an 8–5 season record, 7–1 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
The team he led as interim head coach lost in the first round of the 2006 playoffs, 24–13, to Illinois State.
Hutson joined the Tulane University staff in 2007 as offensive line coach. He was named interim coach for Tulane"s remaining six games following the resignation of Bob Toledo.,
On February 11, 2012 Hutson was hired by the Oakland Raiders to be the tight ends coach under head coach Dennis Allen.
Following Allen"s 2014 dismissal, Hutson was not retained by new head coach Jack Delegate Rio for the 2015 season.
